A hengerre ható gravitációt, a Föld vonzóerejét a felfüggesztő fonal képes ellensúlyozni, nem szakad el. Az ugyanolyan anyagból való 3 fonaldarab együtt háromszor akkora terhelést képes elviselni szakadás nélkül, mint a felső fonal. Egy erőteljes, hirtelen rántás hatására mégis a három fonál szakad el. Ha az erőkifejtés nem hirtelen, rövid idő alatt történik, hanem ráérősen, fokozatosan növeljük a lefelé irányuló húzóerőt, akkor a felső fonal fog elszakadni, hiszen azt még a henger súlya is terheli.
