A Van de Graaff generátor egyik kivezetését egy vízszintes elhelyezkedésű fémcsúcshoz, másik kivezetését egy fémgömbhöz kapcsoljuk. A két elektróda között elhelyezkedő gyertyát meggyújtjuk, majd a generátort bekapcsoljuk. A fémcsúcs irányából érkező heves légáramlat a lángot elfekteti, csaknem elfújja.
