Az izzó széncsúcsok között kialakuló fehér ívfényt kollimátoron bocsátunk keresztül. Ezekből a párhuzamos sugarakból válasszunk ki egy keskeny nyalábot, egy függőleges helyzetű rés segítségével. Ez a párhuzamos fehér fénynyaláb a prizmán áthaladva színeire bomlik. Legkevésbé a piros, legnagyobb mértékben a kék fény térül el.
