Physics Laboratory - Physics MSc, Nanotechnology and Materials Science specialization

In accordance with the general policy of the university this lab course runs in-person.


If you feel any symptom of illness (coughing, fever, runny nose, etc) you should not come to the course. If you cannot attend from any justified reason (above symptoms, quarantine, problems with entering the country, etc), you should inform us at your earliest convenience. Please disinfect your hands upon entry to the room (there is a dispenser machine at the door).

The information on this page applies both to the Research Physicist and to the Nanotechnology and Materials Science specializations.

    • Completion of all programming and measurement control exercises and the laboratory experiments. In case of justified absence, you have the possibility to retake 2 experiments.
    • Handing in reports of the exercises and laboratory experiments.
  • Grading: based on the reports and activity throughout the course.
  • Consultation: arranged individually, on an on-demand basis.

Overview of the lab course

  • Day 1 (6th of September): basics of C# programming (for everyone)
    • Building a GUI, handling events
    • Basic file I/O
    • Communication with instruments over serial port or GPIB
  • Day 2 (13th of September): more C# programming (for everyone)
    • Real-time plotting
    • Using the NI myDAQ
  • Days 3-5: experiment control exercises (for everyone, but scheduled on an individual basis)
  • Days 6-8: lab experiments (depending on the specialization, scheduled on an individual basis)
    • Research physicist specialization: two out of the three measurements below must be completed. Each experiment takes a whole day (~8 hours starting from 8:30). Upon a justified request the measurement dates can be rescheduled once the measurement pair and the lab leaders can agree on a new date.
    • Nanotechnology and Materials Science specialization: the three measurements below must be all completed. The STM measurement takes a whole day (~8 hours starting from 8:30), whereas the Surface physics measurements take a half day each (~4 hours starting from 8:30). Upon a justified request the measurement dates can be rescheduled once the measurement pair and the lab leaders can agree on a new date.

Installing Visual Studio

We use Visual Studio 2017 in the lab computers. For working on your own PC, download and install the Community edition of Visual Studio 2017 or 2019 from the link below:

You should install Visual Studio with .NET workload.

Installing NI DAQmx

In case you would like to use your own PC for working with the myDAQ card, you also need to install the NI-DAQmx library. Download and install it from here: https://www.ni.com/hu-hu/support/downloads/drivers/download.ni-daqmx.html#348669

The installer has a lot of options. You will need NI MAX (Measurement & Automation Explorer), and .NET 4.5 support.

Lab report requirements

Submission rules

  • The lab reports should be sent as a pdf file to the e-mail address of the lab leaders, as well as to the address.
  • The file name should contain the names of the submitting students and the measurement exercise name using the format: stm_smith_white.pdf.
  • The lab reports should be submitted within one week till Sunday midnight. In case of difficulties with the electronic submission the printed out reports are also accepted at the secretary of the Department of Physics till Monday noon.
  • Once in a semester the submission can be delayed with a week without any punishment. Any other delay yields a subtraction of 15 points (< 1 week delay) or 30 points (> 1 week delay) from the final score (max. 100 points) of each delayed lab report.

Expected style of the lab report

The lab report should follow the style of scientific publications: short abstract, introduction, description of the applied measurement methods, description and discussion of the measurements, conclusions. Supporting information, like the key parts of the measurement code should also be submitted as an appendix. Special attention should be taken on the proper citation of the sources. Note that carefully edited figures are also key requirements in a high quality publication.
